How to Study Agriculture
Agriculture: Chapter Overview
Agriculture is a major primary activity in India and is closely connected with food production, rural livelihoods, agro-based industries and the wider economy. For Class 10, the chapter is best studied as a connected chain: types of farming → cropping patterns → major crops → technological and institutional reforms → challenges faced by farmers → map work.

1. Types of Farming
Primitive Subsistence Farming
This type of farming is practised on small patches of land using simple tools and family or community labour. Production is generally intended mainly to meet the needs of the farmer's household.
Intensive Subsistence Farming
It is practised in areas where population pressure on land is high. Farmers try to obtain high production from relatively small holdings through intensive use of labour and inputs.
Commercial Farming
Commercial farming is undertaken with the aim of producing crops for sale in the market. The use of modern inputs and technology can be more significant than in subsistence farming.
Plantation Farming
Plantation farming is a form of commercial farming in which a single crop is generally grown on a large area. Important plantation crops include tea, coffee and rubber.
