WHAT IS OPEN BOOK EXAM?

CBSE TO START OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been making frequent changes in 10th Board Examination to lessen the pressure of students. Open Book Examination is the new change in this episode. Let’s know about it.

Making a major change in its pattern CBSE has given its consent to OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION in board exams. This new system will be started for the students of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th.

CBSE had formed a committee under a former chairman as its president to look for the possibilities of this system.

The students of 9th and 10th classes have to appear in school based exams also, so CBSE will provide questions related to Case Studies to the schools.

Questions related to case studies will examine the presentation skills of students which will show how better the students understand the lesson.

OPEN BOOK EXAM IN 10th & 12th FROM NEXT YEAR (2013-’14)

Open Book Exam System will be started from the next session (2013-’14) in classes 9th & 11th. It will be a part of the Formative Assessment. And after that this system will be started in 10th & 12th from the session of 2014-’15.

Case studies will carry 20% weightage in the Open Book Exam System. It means that if the question paper is of 100 marks, case studies will carry 20 marks.

Students will be told the case study 3-4 months before the exam from which the questions will be asked. Based on the case studies such questions will be asked which will examine the Analytical Abilities of the students.
These questions will be based on application. Case studies will not include such questions which can be answered in a single line/sentence.

OPEN BOOK EXAM IN 5 SUBJECTS OF 11th & 12th

Open Book Examination System is to be started in Economics, Political Science, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at senior secondary level.

OPEN BOOK EXAMINATION SHOULD BE VIEWED AS AN OPTIMISTIC STEP

We should view this new system as an optimistic step and should not be worried about it now as it is just a beginning. There is no need of debate or discussion for it.

It goes without saying anything that children come under the pressure of board exams. New change may either lessen the pressure or increase it.
The condition of increasing pressure may be expected because the students may think that they have already been told everything and so they will have to score maximum marks in it.

There is no doubt that if new things are experimented, they will have some disadvantages also, but we’ll have to do something new for change.

Open Book Examination System is being started very late in our country as it is being used in the rest countries for quite a long time now.

OTHER CHANGES IN CBSE
