Resources and Development: Chapter Overview
Resources are the materials, objects, features and other elements that can satisfy human needs when they are technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable. Their availability is not enough by itself: resources have to be carefully assessed, planned and used.
The chapter connects two ideas. India has a great diversity of resources, but careless or unequal use can create environmental, economic and social problems. Resource planning and conservation are therefore necessary for long-term development.

1. Resources: Meaning and Classification
A resource becomes useful when it has utility and can be used to satisfy human needs. Resources are not simply things found in nature; their usefulness depends on technology, economic feasibility and human needs.
Classification by origin

2. Development of Resources and Sustainable Development
Resources are valuable for development, but indiscriminate exploitation can lead to depletion, unequal distribution and environmental damage. Therefore, the objective is not simply to extract more resources; it is to use them judiciously.
Sustainable development
Sustainable development means development that meets present needs while protecting the resource base and environmental conditions needed by future generations. It requires a balance between economic development, resource conservation and environmental protection.
3. Resource Planning in India
Resource planning is a complex process because resources differ in their distribution, quality, availability and usefulness. India has developed planning approaches to identify resources and use them according to national priorities.

6. Soil as a Resource
Soil is one of the most important renewable natural resources. It supports plant growth and agriculture and provides a medium for many biological and ecological processes.
Factors of soil formation
Soil formation is influenced by parent rock, climate, relief, vegetation and other organisms, and time. These factors interact over long periods and produce differences in soil characteristics from one region to another.
Soil profile
A soil profile is a vertical section through the soil showing different layers or horizons. The layers differ in colour, texture, composition and other properties.
7. Classification of Soils in India
Indian soils vary considerably in colour, texture, depth, chemical composition and fertility. The major soil groups studied in this chapter are alluvial, black, red and yellow, laterite, arid and forest/mountain soils.
Alluvial soil
Formed by the deposition of sediments brought by rivers. It is widespread in the northern plains and also occurs in river valleys and coastal/deltaic areas. Khadar refers to newer alluvium, while Bangar refers to older alluvium.
Black soil
Also known as regur soil. It is especially associated with the Deccan region and is well suited to crops such as cotton. It has high moisture-retaining capacity and develops deep cracks when dry.
Red and yellow soil
Develops on crystalline igneous rocks in areas with low rainfall in the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan plateau. The colour is related to iron compounds.
Laterite soil
Develops under conditions of high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternating wet and dry periods. Intense leaching can make the soil relatively poor in plant nutrients unless appropriately managed.
Arid soil
Found mainly in arid and semi-arid regions. These soils are often sandy and may contain varying amounts of salts. Irrigation and appropriate management can improve agricultural use in suitable areas.
Forest and mountain soil
Found in hilly and mountainous regions and vary according to altitude, slope and vegetation. Their characteristics change with local environmental conditions.
Alluvial soil: Bangar and Khadar
