2. Study industry-wise

Revise the characteristics, location factors, importance and challenges of the major industries in the chapter.

3. Practise application

Connect industrial activity with employment, infrastructure, pollution, resource use and sustainable development.

4. Prepare maps

Learn the prescribed locations by category and practise them repeatedly on an outline map of India.

5. Test yourself

Use MCQs first, then move to 2-, 3- and 5-mark answers and case-based questions.

Review definitions, location factors, industry comparisons, pollution-control measures and map locations.

CORE CONCEPTS

Manufacturing Industries: Key Concepts

What is Manufacturing?

Manufacturing involves processing raw materials and transforming them into finished or semi-finished goods. It increases the utility and often the value of materials.

Classification of Industries

Industries may be classified on the basis of ownership, size, source of raw material, weight or bulk, and the role of the product in further production.

Industrial Location

Location is influenced by raw materials, power, labour, capital, transport, water, markets and government policies. The relative importance of these factors varies between industries.

Manufacturing and Development

Manufacturing supports employment, trade, value addition and diversification and creates linkages with agriculture, mining, transport and services.

Exam tip: In a question on factors affecting industrial location, explain the reason behind each factor instead of simply listing it. For example, bulky raw materials can encourage industries to locate near their source to reduce transport costs.
INDUSTRY-WISE REVISION

Major Manufacturing Industries

IndustryWhat to reviseTypical exam focus
Cotton TextilesHistorical development, raw material, location factors, major centres and challengesWhy centres developed in particular regions; importance and problems
Jute TextilesRaw material, concentration along the Hooghly, products, markets and challengesLocation factors and importance of jute-based manufacturing
Sugar IndustryRaw material, seasonal nature, location and regional distributionWhy mills are generally located near sugarcane-growing areas
Iron and SteelRaw materials, integrated plants, location factors and major centresWhy steel is a basic industry and why raw-material and power considerations matter
CementMineral raw materials, location and usesRole of limestone and importance to construction and infrastructure
AutomobileGrowth, production centres, market and supporting industriesIndustrial linkages, skilled labour, market and infrastructure
Information TechnologySoftware services, employment, exports and major technology centresKnowledge-based industry, skilled workforce and global connectivity
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Industrial Pollution and Environmental Protection

Manufacturing can create air, water, land and noise pollution. Students should understand the causes and consequences of industrial pollution and the broad measures used to reduce environmental damage.

Air Pollution

Smoke, gases and particulate matter from industrial processes and fuel combustion can degrade air quality.

Water Pollution

Untreated industrial effluents, chemicals and heated wastewater can affect rivers and other water bodies.

Land Pollution

Industrial solid waste and improper disposal can contaminate land and create disposal problems.

Control Measures

Cleaner fuels, effluent treatment, recycling and reuse of water, waste reduction, energy efficiency and pollution-control equipment can reduce impacts.

MAP WORK

Manufacturing Industries Map Practice

Revise map work separately because location-based questions require accurate identification and labelling. For CBSE 2026–27, Manufacturing Industries map work is prescribed for locating and labelling selected cotton textile centres, iron and steel plants and software technology parks.

Category2026–27 locations to revise
Cotton Textile IndustriesMumbai, Indore, Surat, Kanpur, Coimbatore
Iron and Steel PlantsDurgapur, Bokaro, Jamshedpur, Bhilai, Vijayanagar, Salem
Software Technology ParksNoida, Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram
Map strategy: Learn locations by category first. On the final revision, cover the labels and identify each location from its position on an outline map of India.
